Putting Wheels on the DSM-IV: Using the DSM-IV as a Diagnostic Tool
Level I
This workshop is for Registered and Provisional Psychologists, as well as Graduate students in professional psychology programs. Content includes:
- History of the DSM System
- Diagnostic Nosologies
- Applications of the DSM
- Making the DSM Manageable
- A Semi-Structured Interview for Diagnosis
- Diagnostic Entities - A Clinical Look
- Communicating a Diagnosis
- Future Directions
This workshop is facilitated by Michael Zwiers, M.Ed., Ph.D., Registered Psychologist and Manager, Clinical Services for the Calgary Learning Centre. He has worked in a range of practice settings including school boards, hospitals, primary care with family physicians and private practice. Dr. Zwiers has taught courses as a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta and University of British Columbia, and lectured at Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario. He has coauthored the book Effective Interviewing of Children (Zwiers & Morrissette, 1999).
Successful participants will be provided with a CD Rom of materials, including the complete Semi-Structured Clinical Interview format for the DSM-IV.

DSM-IV: Advanced Clinical Applications
Level II
This Certified Course is designed for advanced practitioners and those who have taken the Level I Putting Wheels on the DSM-IV: Using the DSM-IV as a Diagnostic Tool course. It provides a model for case formulation and differential diagnosis with complex client presentations. The course will provide a mix of didactic information and case studies. Participants are invited to bring a case for small-group formulation if they desire. Content includes:
- Comprehensive Model for Dealing with Complex Diagnosis
- Stages and Process in Data Collection
- Context of Symptoms and Behaviours
- Effects of Medical Disorders, Medications and Street Drugs
- Risk Factors for Mental Disorders
- Distinguishing Subthreshold from Disordered Presentations
- Comorbidities and Dual Diagnoses
- Challenging and Difficult Clients
- Overcoming Challenges in Diagnosis
- Case Formulation
- Communicating Complex Diagnoses
